Content Writing & Your Search Engine Rankings

Mar. 1 2018 Dealership Tips By Dealer Spike

It’s no secret that there are some key factors to help YOUR dealership website rank above the rest on Google and other search engines. To get a general overview of these rules, take a look at one of our old blog posts, titled “SEO Best Practices for Dealerships.” Today we’ll put the magnifying glass on a specific factor that you may not realize the importance of - Does your website have enough WRITTEN content?

Main content for a dealership website would typically include pictures of units, general information about the units such as color and condition, promotional information or graphics, a video of the unit in motion, and more.

Written content is different. It targets a wider range of searches by adding content not covered by the inventory. This could include parts, accessories, activity areas, and more. It should contain keywords that attract and retain users on your website. Here are a few tips from our SEO team, which offers Content Writing as a stand-alone product and as part of our advanced SEO and marketing packages:

  • Write for humans, not robots. “Keyword stuffing,” or adding a ton of keywords that you think will attract Google or other search engines without creating relevance or useful information, will backfire. Don’t focus on exact words, but pay attention to the subject at hand and the related keywords will come naturally.
  • Focus on having 100% unique content.
  • Focus on one subject per page. Let’s say you own a home improvement store and you’re adding written content to a page about barbeques. You may be tempted to add similar content about smokers, but resist! You will be rewarded by Google for having relevant, targeted content.
  • Answer common questions within your content. What do customers want to know about?
  • Contrary to popular belief, long is good! Our team recommends 800-1000 words of written content or more.
  • Short paragraphs are also good. Text that is broken up is better for readability, so a general rule of 2-4 sentences per paragraph is best practice.
  • Link to other pages on your website that are related to the content on the current page. Keep your website visitor engaged!
